Roles

Counselor and Client Roles

There is a strong alliance between the client and counselor; however, the therapeutic relationship is not crucial to effectiveness of cognitive behavior therapies (Tan, 2011). The role of a cognitive behavior therapist is an active role of diagnostician, educator, and technical consultant. The ACT therapist, which is a type of cognitive behavior therapy is experiential, empathetic, compassionate, reassuring, diversity and community oriented, and open to spirituality (Seligman et al., 2021).

Role of Assessment

In Cognitive Behavior approaches the therapist may use assessments, like the BASIC I.D. framework, to gauging the intensity of a client’s needs (Tan, 2011), and sometimes assessments are used by non-therapist to assess the effectiveness of the therapy. In one study completed by Ducasse et al to measure the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy versus relaxation group therapy on individuals suffering with suicidal behavior disorder, the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale was used (2018). One can infer that assessment plays a significant role in the ACT process and in advocating for the use of it with clients.
